I seriously thought that raising Irish twins wouldn’t be so bad because the clothes go from one dresser to the next but there are so many reasons why it is so hard.
Double the amount of time for each milestone
You go from terrible twos to terrible twos and trying threes to trying threes and so forth. It will test your patience and sanity.
Lack of Attention
When both children are so close together in their age, it is difficult to provide proper attention to both of them simultaneously. As one child will want something and you will be catering to them. The positive thing is they will be learning patience and taking turns.
No Self-Time
It becomes difficult to find time for oneself while parenting Irish twins. Why? Well, it will be highly unlikely for your little ones to have the same schedule for their daily activities such as sleeping, their midnight feedings or nightmares, and so on. So, you can imagine how little time or if at all you will have any on your hands.
Sleep Deprivation
With little time for yourself, sleep deprivation would certainly be a part of your daily routine for a few years.
Depleting Bank Balance
Raising a single child is expensive enough, and we are talking about two full-fledged little ones here. So be ready to work on your budgeting skills as you may think formula and diapers are bad, but when they are eating during a growth spurt you will be feeling it in your wallet.
No Time for Cooking
You will not have enough time and energy to cook a proper meal while parenting close-in-age siblings unless you are a supermom with extra hands. You may try for a few nights, but exhaustion will set in, and ordering out will seem more convenient. Oh man have I been there, and I feel your pain.
Mood Swings
Sleep deprivation might lead to mood swings as well. Mood swings tend to be common, but your patience is being tried and your nutrients are often depleted after having two little ones back to back. It will take time for your body to stabilize to the new normal.
A Home Marathon
Most of the time you will be running around your house catering to their needs. Imagine a moment when you are feeding one of them, and another one wakes up from her slumber with the most shrieky cry.
Competition
Competition between twins and Irish twins starts surprisingly early in life, and the squabbles can become incredibly intense. The constant cycle of fighting and refereeing is a burden on parents. Many parents would agree, the squabbling and competition between siblings are one of the hardest things about parenting them.
Double the Mess
You know the old saying, “Two heads are better than one”? That certainly seems to be the case with multiples and their messes. Where one kid can certainly wreak some havoc, when you get two together, their messes can be monumental. With helping hands to share the work and bravado fueled by encouraging siblings, parents of multiples have to be ready to face their share of disasters.
Do you have Irish twins or twins and struggle? Please share below in the comments what you often struggle with so we can help and learn from each other. They do say it takes a village to raise children.
Sincerely,
