Just because the weather gets brisker doesn’t mean it’s time for your kids to be stuck inside on the couch. Fall is one of the most popular sports seasons for staying active and enjoying the outdoors before the winter cold hits.
As your children settle into school, they’ll certainly be bouncing off the walls with energy after a long day of virtual or in-person learning this year. While coronavirus restrictions are still in place, some states allow for certain sports to take place under new guidelines. Check your state or town’s latest mandates regarding athletics. In the meantime, these are the best fall sports for kids to keep them active for another season.
Soccer
Soccer is almost a rite of passage for young kids entering the sports realm. Soccer is a safe sport, with little equipment purchases required, and entails a lot of running to get your kids moving at weeknight practices and weekend games.
Baseball and Softball
Baseball and softball commonly coin the term “fall ball” for their popularity during fall seasons. Fall ball is known for its slightly more laid-back season than the competition of spring season, making it a great time to introduce your kids to the sport.
Baseball and softball are low contact sports that teach kids coordination and strategy. From tee-ball to travel leagues, baseball and softball are great fall sport choices for any age or skill set.
Pickleball
If your kids enjoy tennis, try introducing them to pickleball. Pickleball is a combination of tennis, table tennis, and badminton, and it’s easy to learn. Pickleball uses a smaller-size court than regulation tennis, which can make it a great option for younger kids who haven’t quite mastered the size of a tennis court.
Lacrosse
If your kid is ready to play rough, enroll them in lacrosse. Lacrosse combines the strategy and skill of hockey, soccer, and basketball, making it an action-packed sport for your more rambunctious kids. Lacrosse offers less contact than football would, but more contact and protective equipment than soccer, making it a happy medium for parents worried about their child’s safety.
Soccer, baseball and softball, pickleball, and lacrosse are some of the best fall sports for kids of all ages, skill sets, and energy levels.

Kate Haldeman
Hey Ashley,
These are all great suggestions for fall sports. Do you have any recommendations for sports that require little or no equipment?
Thanks,
Kate
The Irish Twin's Momma
Hi Kate,
Football would only require the ball and would be good. They can do touch, not tackle. We do that every Thanksgiving while everything is cooking we play. That is the only one that comes to mind that requires the least.
Sincerely,
-Ashley
