Science Experiments To Try With Your Kids

Science experiments are a fun and engaging way to open kids’ eyes to how science works outside of laboratories. Trying out these science experiments with your kids is a great way to keep them learning and engaged while also spending quality time together.

Coffee Filter Flowers

Chromatography is a separation method used to analyze the components that make up a substance. Most people don’t realize the many real-world applications of chromatography because of its highly scientific nature.

For a more kid-friendly explanation of how chromatography works, have your kids draw lines around a coffee filter in different colored markers, leaving the center blank. Then, fold the filter up and place it in a cup filled with just enough water to submerge the filter’s blank center. The water will travel up the filter and begin to separate the colors. For example, a black marker may separate into the blue and yellow shades that created the black ink.

Grow Crystals

This science experiment will certainly wow your kids. Bend pipe cleaners into fun shapes like a star or a heart and attach a string to the final product. Next, you’ll need to place the pipe cleaner in a jar using a popsicle stick around the lip to keep the pipe cleaner from sinking. Once the pipe cleaner is in place, add boiling water to the jar until the pipe cleaner is covered, and then dissolve borax into the water.

After a few hours, the water and the borax’s chemical reaction will start to form crystals around the pipe cleaner shape. Using this method is a great way to discuss chemical reactions with your kids. Be sure to highlight the importance of scientific safety when using borax substances.

Self-Inflating Balloons

Since gas is nearly impossible to see, it can be challenging for young children to understand how gas works. Creating self-inflating balloons is a great way to help your kids visualize how gaseous matter functions.

For this experiment, add baking soda and vinegar to a bottle. Once the vinegar is in, put a balloon over the lip of the bottle. The mixture of baking soda and vinegar will create a gas that will then inflate the balloon.
