Knowing what to teach a child about flag etiquette is important as it teaches them about the Flag Code and rules set around the American flag. It’s important to teach these rules to your little one as the flag symbolizes respect and patriotism. They’ll encounter flag etiquette throughout life; additionally, these understandings answer the many questions which inquisitive children may have.
How To Act Around the Flag
There are various ways to respect the flag, and the way we act around it is one of them, so remind your child that the flag isn’t for decoration nor is it a toy; the flag also isn’t a fun costume to try on. Also, teach your child that the flag shouldn’t touch the ground, even when you’re folding it.
Educate your little ones on how to act around the flag by giving them their own! This allows them to understand how to fold, clean, and even mend it, and also helps remind them that the flag is a symbol of our country.
When To Fly the Flag
Whether the flag is displayed because of a national holiday or stored away due to inclement weather, teach your kiddos when to fly the flag since it symbolizes patriotism and those who fought for it. Moreover, help them understand what a half-mast flag means and the protocol around it.
By understanding how to display the flag, your children can better respect it. Lead by example. During rainy days or after sunset, take the flag down and properly fold it. Consider allowing your child to help with this process to really engage them!
Proper Flag Disposal
Lastly, teach your child how to properly dispose of a damaged flag. Destroying the flag breaks the Flag Code, so understanding the correct procedure is important. After much wear and tear, all flags suffer damage, so it’s important you fly one in good condition.
When it’s time to dispose of an old flag, do so properly by dropping it off at an American Legion post. Do this with your children to transform it into a learning experience. By understanding what to teach a child about flag etiquette, you can begin providing your little ones with a deeper understanding of the American flag and those who fought for it.
