You’re not sure who is more nervous about the first day of school: you or your child. Show your kid that they can take on anything by helping them prepare. No one knows how to prepare your child for their first day of school since anything can happen. With these tips and tricks, though, you can guarantee they’ll have the best start possible.
Visit Their School Before Classes Start
Take a trip to your child’s school to practice getting there and see what it is like if you’ve never visited. Depending on the school, you may have the opportunity to go inside on specific days. Your child can see their classroom, meet their teacher, and find out which friends they will have in their class.
Practice a Morning Routine
Within the week before school starts, encourage your child to start practicing routines needed for success in school. For instance, they may need to go to bed and wake up sooner. Have them pretend each day is a school day by getting dressed when they get up in the morning and having breakfast before heading out the door with their supplies.
Go Shopping for School Supplies
Inspect the condition of the supplies you bought for your child last year. Even backpacks can go through a lot of wear and tear in a year. If you can’t replace the zipper on your child’s broken backpack, you may need to buy a new one. Allow your child to take part in the shopping experience. Choosing their supplies will motivate them to use them.
Read About What To Expect
Especially if you are trying to find ways to prepare your child for kindergarten, you should read books to them about what to expect on the first day of school. Reading to your child sparks thought and conversation. Your child can connect with the characters in the book and learn from the problems they face.
Build Skills
Set your child up for success in school by ensuring they can perform proper self-help skills. Your child should have the confidence to use the restroom, wash their hands, dress themselves, blow their nose, tie their shoes, and perform other essential functions to help them get through the day. While their teacher can assist them, they will grow confident the more they can do things independently.
Knowing how to prepare your child for their first day of school will give you confidence, too. You don’t have to sit around and worry that your kid is having a rough time when you prepare and practice. Set them up with the supplies they need, and your kid is ready to conquer the world—just like you were.
