Is your kiddo obsessed with dinosaurs? Have you been scouring the Internet for some cool facts to share with your child? Uncover a couple of dino-centric fun facts so that your little one has something cool to share with their friends at school!
Dinosaurs Lived on Every Continent
If you want to really wow your child, share this bit of information: dinosaurs ruled the entire Earth, since the seven continents were one during the Mesozoic Era. They even lived in the Artic! Of course, once you learn that there were over 700 species of dinosaurs, this doesn’t sound as shocking.
They Couldn’t Fly
Contrary to what most people think, the pterodactyl wasn’t a dinosaur, nor were its fellow winged lizards. So why aren’t the prehistoric creatures that flew considered dinosaurs? Because scientists strictly mean land-dwelling reptiles when they describe dinosaurs. The term “pterosaurs” describes the reptiles that flew. An even cooler fact to tell your kiddo is that the birds we see today have a connection to these reptiles.
They Came in Many Sizes
Just like most animals and even people, dinosaurs came in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some dinosaurs stretched over 150 feet from head to tail, while others were as big as chickens. One thing we know is that many of the largest dinosaurs were vegetarians! This fun fact could be the way to get your little ones to eat their fruits and veggies.
Which Was the Biggest?
The Dreadnoughtus is one of the largest types of dinosaur scientists have uncovered—it was around 80 feet long and 40 feet tall! But there’s a chance this dinosaur wasn’t the biggest. One fun fact about dinosaurs for kids is that the remains of the Argentinosaurus prove it may have been larger. It stretched 72 to 85 feet long and weighed in at 80 tons, but no one has uncovered a complete skeleton.
Who Was the Smallest?
The Microvenator was one of the smallest dinosaurs. Scientists suspect it was only about 4 feet long and weighed as little as 6.5 to 14 pounds. Despite their tiny size, Microvenators were meat-eaters, and they could move fast!
They’re Still Around Today
Dinosaurs went extinct 66 million years ago, but in some ways, they still exist—lizards, turtles, snakes, and crocodiles are all cousins of the dinosaur. If that’s not just about one of the most remarkable fun facts about dinosaurs for kids, I don’t know what is!
