Grandparent’s Day Guide

Grandparents day is right around the corner and it is time to celebrate your wonderful grandparents that brought up your parents to be the amazing individuals they are today. So let’s spoil our grandparents as they spoil us this upcoming National Grandparent’s Day!

When is Grandparent’s Day?

In 2019 it is on September 8th. Grandparents Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in September after Labor Day and is the perfect time to spend some quality time together.

Why do we celebrate Grandparents Day?

Marian McQuade began a campaign in 1970 to establish a national day that would honor grandparents. In 1978 President Jimmy Carter declared the first Sunday after Labor Day to be National Grandparents Day. Each year the current president issues a proclamation to keep the tradition going.

Does Grandparent’s day have an official flower and song?

Yes, it does. The official flower is the forget-me-not and the song is by Johnny Prill’s “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa.” Both were chosen by the National Grandparents Day Council

Fun activities to do:

Most grandparents don’t care what activity they are doing- they just want to spend time with their grandchildren.

  1. Have your grandparents show the children one of there favorite hobbies or places they like to go to.
    1. Examples: Baseball game, out fishing, childhood game(s) (board or cards), car shows, etc.
  2. If your grandparents prefer a calmer approach may be, ask them to show you their favorite movie given that it is hopefully family-friendly or have an enjoyable picnic together.

No matter what the best Grandparent’s day activity involves you and your grandparents together, celebrating your family and each other.

Gift Ideas:

  1. Often grandparents will get a store-bought card and gift card, however, they prefer a homemade card as they are made and created from the heart.
  2. Field trips: If your grandfather loves fishing maybe go fishing together as a family. Another option is if they love sports like baseball, football, or even Nascar take them to a game or race. This is a memory that they will always remember.
  3. Bake some treats: If your grandparents love baking why not bake some special treats with them. A sweet treat for dessert that is made with love not only satisfy our stomach but also your heart. If they love to cook but you are unable to cook with them a new oven mitt that has a handprint on it would be a great way to provide helping hands. (Helping Hands Kitchen Mitt)You could even add a saying or a bow to give it the extra personal touch.
