When you think the first year is the most challenging, but you are proved wrong. via @irishtwinsmom11

The beginning with Irish Twins

The first year of having these two boys, Jack and Luke, I thought, was the most challenging, and I may have been right.

What is the definition of Irish Twins?

The term “Irish Twins” is that two children were born within a year apart (twelve months or less).

Jack and Luke Havecker

Some Thing’s They Never Tell You About Irish Twins:

911 What’s your Emergency:

When Luke was about two months old, I went to change his diaper. Jack grabbed my phone off the couch and called 9-1-1 due to the emergency options on cell phones today. When I told the dispatcher, “it appears that my 1-year-old doesn’t like it when his little brother gets a diaper change,” she just started laughing.

Going Shopping with Irish Twins:

When you have to go to Walmart with a one-year-old that has just started walking and an infant, it is a challenge at first, and then it becomes easier. I would put Luke in the baby carrier while Jack was in front of the shopping cart. Often we left while someone was screaming. However, we were all alive at the end of the day, and that is all that matters.

Public Appearances with Irish Twin’s:

Out in public by myself when I had to go to the bathroom with an infant strapped to you and a one-year-old touching everything was complicated. It seemed like all I was doing was saying stop touching this or that all the time.

One day, I decided to take them to the park, and I had Luke in the stroller. I was trying to play with Jack; however, it’s tough to keep pushing a stroller around so you can keep an eye on your other child. We didn’t do this often alone. We started going with some other local momma’s, which made it a little easier because Jack had other kids his age to interact and play.

Financial Aspect:

The financial side of having Irish twins or any multiples for that matter. You have double the cost of formula, wipes, diapers, and more. The positive side of having them close together is that when Jack grew out of something, Luke grew right into like clothing and toys.

Using cloth diapers and realizing I didn’t need two of everything was very helpful. Here is my list of the absolute necessities.

Pictures for Special Occasions and Holidays:

There will be fewer pictures for particular occasions, so my best suggestion is to have a Friday keep up with taking pictures while you keep the twins alive.

Then Jack celebrated his second birthday, and, for some reason, I have no pictures of it. Yes, this happens when you have multiples! Especially since Luke doesn’t even have his first-year scrapbook. That is on my to-do-list.

In Conclusion

Some situations will be the same as having multiple children, twins, or not. Stay tuned as I will be providing you with more information that I have learned about the differences. Every day I find a new way to conquer my day and make it a successful one with the boys by my side.

Sincerely,

I can only imagine how busy it would keep you – Having a baby in the house can keep you busy but having 2 young ones to care for… I hadn’t thought about the positives of the hand-me-downs lol

My sister and I were a year apart and she got all my hand-me-downs for this same reason lol

Gosh, I thought having kids two years apart was challenging (and it was). As mine grow up, they have a lot of fun together, most of the time. They are able to entertain each other, which has always been super helpful.

I hope as they continue to grow they can entertain each other. Our original plan was to have them two years apart, but that didn’t happen.

I am glad I read this post because I wasn’t sure what Irish twins meant, but now I know! I feel overwhelmed with a 9 year old, a 2.5 year old, and my 1.5 year old dog…so I can’t even imagine my kids being THAT close in age. Seems like you are making it happen though! 🙂

I can imagine it’s hard at the beginning with them so close in age but as they get older they will be great play mates!

I always wondered what having Irish twins would be like! (And often joked with my husband that that we were going to have them lol) My two boys are going to be exactly 2 years apart and I’m nervous about all the challenges that’s going to bring. But you saying some of the benefits of having Irish twins is making me focus on the benefits of have 2 kids 2 and under 🙂

It sounds worse then it is. They really are friends and look after each other which is a blessing that I hope continues for years to come.

You are truly inspiring! I have my hands full with just one toddler! I enjoyed reading this post and it gave me a great appreciation for mothers who have twins or littles really close in age.
