With the responsibility of taking care of another human being on your shoulders, it’s normal to think that you’re forgetting something important. Familiarize yourself with these common mistakes new parents make to give yourself some peace of mind knowing that you’re on the right track.
How Are They Sleeping?
Your newborn’s sleep is critical to their development. Make sure they get enough and are comfortable while sleeping. There are several important features to apply and avoid when making your baby’s crib— from a firm mattress to breathable fabrics. Researching and investing in proper newborn bedding is a must for healthy sleep.
Feeding on Demand
The first few weeks of your newborn’s feeding routine can be rigorous. Experts agree that babies should be fed every two to three hours for their first few weeks, with waking them up out of sleep being necessary to keep this routine. It may seem that your newborn does not want to be fed, but it is an important part of their development that they keep to this pattern.
Burping Your Baby
Not properly burping the baby is a very common mistake new parents make. Improper burping can result in your baby coughing up their food later on. The gas buildup is also a result of not burping your baby correctly, causing your newborn some discomfort. Many new parents are nervous when handling their newborn, but improper burping is both a safety and developmental risk.
The Right Formula or Proper Breastfeeding?
Mixing formula correctly is key to healthy growth in newborns. Double-check to see if it’s not too diluted or concentrated. Keeping the balance is necessary, otherwise, your newborn will not get the nutrients they need to develop.
There can also be trouble with breastfeeding when it comes to making sure that your newborn is latched and nursing properly. Consulting with a lactation consultant may be necessary if you are experiencing pain during feeding or if you have health concerns regarding your baby.
Keeping the Right Temperature
To promote healthy growth in your newborn, it is necessary to keep the temperature of the home properly adjusted. Babies can burn too many calories when keeping themselves warm in cold environments, resulting in that energy being spent on heat regulation and not on bodily development. The proper temperature fluctuates depending on the time of year, but the generally-accepted scale is from 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit.
Safe from Germs?
Newborns have weak immune systems and are highly susceptible to germs and other infections for their first two months. It is important to avoid crowded areas and any individual who might be sick. It is still perfectly healthy and encouraged to take your newborn out to enjoy the outdoors, but only when there are minimal people around.
