Homeschooling can be both challenging and rewarding for various reasons. Although homeschooling allows you to customize your child’s learning, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Catering to the needs of your child can be challenging at times but there are plenty of tips that make homeschooling much easier. Homeschooling a child with ADHD requires an awareness of what your child needs and an understanding of how to cater to those needs.

Homeschooling Tips for a Child With ADHD

Maintain a Routine

Maintaining a routine is one of the most helpful homeschooling tips for a child with ADHD because it helps eliminates worry and distraction. Transitions can be challenging for children since opportunities for all sorts of distractions are present. Having a routine allows for a seamless transition between tasks because your child knows exactly what’s coming next in their day. It also helps to eliminate any worry or frustration associated with not know what to expect. If a routine is maintained throughout the week, your child can feel confident and ready to learn. Creating a routine also allows you to maximize your child’s focus by planning things based on when they’re the most receptive to learning.

Eliminate Busywork

Figuring out what works best for your child is one of the most important homeschooling tips for a child with ADHD. This means finding the best way to teach your child the material they need to learn. School can be full of busywork in the attempt to maximize the hours in the day, but for many children, this method does not work. Busywork can often drain a child and make it difficult to focus all day. Eliminating busywork and filing the day with activities that cater to your child’s learning style can be extremely beneficial. You don’t have to get rid of all your workbooks—but consider implementing a variety of activities, rather than filling the day with busywork and mundane tasks.

Test Regularly

Homeschooling can be overwhelming when it comes to wondering about your child’s academic growth. If you find yourself questioning whether your child is performing at their grade level, researching testing options is something to consider. MAP Testing is a great option for homeschooling families because this assessment tests children in subjects such as reading and math. MAP testing is a good option for any child regardless of their needs; it’s online and untimed, which allows for a comfortable and stress-free testing experience. Testing regularly is a great way to optimize your child’s learning because it ensures you’re teaching material your child is ready to learn.
