As parents of younger children, we must prepare them for the next phase of their lives. These are a few healthy habits to teach your kids while they’re still young so that they can grow up practicing them.
Eat a Balanced Diet of Colorful Foods
Growing bodies need all the nutrients they can get. From fruits and veggies to lean meats, grains, and dairy products, they’re all crucial to helping your child develop. This is why teaching them the importance of eating right is a key component to a long, healthy life. As a general rule to remember, brightly colored foods have a higher nutritional value. So, you’ll want to prioritize things like apples, carrots, broccoli, and beans.
Choose Water Over Sugary Soda
It’s also important that you teach your kids about the benefits of drinking water over many of their beloved sugary beverages. When told to drink water, kids are often put off by the bland taste when compared to juice or soda. So, if given the choice, they’ll choose the one that tastes better to them every time. But allowing them to do this can prevent them from getting the necessary amount of fluids for their bodies to function, and they could become dehydrated. Dehydration has a series of effects on the body, many of which are harmful over time. Therefore, it’s vital that your kids know when they need to drink water and when they can choose something more flavorful.
Practice Proper Oral Hygiene
Another crucial healthy habit to teach your kids is to regularly brush their teeth and do so in the proper way. Though it may not initially seem like it, a person’s oral hygiene is directly linked to their overall physical well-being. Because of this, practicing proper oral care when a child is young can really set them up for success later on in life. Healthy teeth and gums are at a reduced risk of developing the disease, meaning they’ll typically last longer and stay stronger.
Always Wash Your Hands
This might also seem like a given, but it’s shocking how often children overlook washing their hands. Most germs, bacteria, and diseases are transferred among surfaces by an individual’s hands. This is especially the case with young kids who like touching everything. As such, teaching them to wash their hands after playing outside, before dinner, and after going to the bathroom is essential to cutting down on the risk.
